He's Gonna Live

from The Damaged by Mark Alan Dooley

/

lyrics

He came home from ‘Nam with one arm, some medals
And a thousand yard stare.
His permanent duty station’s now a wicker rocking chair
On the front porch of a trailer.
His brother helped him buy it.
Bought a fifth of whiskey and he crawled all up inside it.
And still he lives.
Can’t make heads or tails of
Anything anymore, but he still lives.

A t-shirt and some cargo shorts, the whiskey keeps him warm.
Flips off God and the neighbors with his phantom arm.
For a man who never met a stranger, everything’s so strange.
And still he lives.
No idea why he still lives.
Can’t make heads or tails of anything anymore,
But he still lives.
He still lives.

He had a Colt Commander, worn off half the blue.
He’d capped a lot of VC, yeah he knew what to do.
Shucking off this mortal coil had a certain charm.
Maybe slap the face of God with his phantom arm.

When the dreams were bad, sweating in his bed,
He’d take the Colt Commander, put it to his head.
Listened to his heartbeat, ticking like a clock.
Knew some piece inside him didn’t want to stop.

Threw out all the whiskey. That was a month ago.
Not bad for a first step. Just eleven more, you know.
They called it a miracle. I don’t think that’s true.
Each day a man wakes up, decides what he’s gonna do.
I think he decided, after all that he’s been through,
He’s gonna live.
